Birds in the Maldives   Including all resident species of birds, regular and irregular winter visitors, some 145 species of birds have been recorded in the Maldives. A precise figure could never be given as news species continue to be found in remote islands while the status of the existing species is very vague. Some 23 species of birds have been protected by law. They are mainly sea birds.
